An Introduction to Gemstones & Crystals

Let the stone choose you. What colors and gems do you resonate with?

Gathered from all corners of the Earth, gemstones are born of nature and evolve naturally into beautiful pieces of art. Gemstones are found in different hues, tones and saturations. Throughout history, a primary use of gemstones has been for healing and spiritual rituals, and today people continue to believe in the inherent power of gemstones. The power of gemstones are emitted through vibrations and frequencies which are said to have a strong influence on the mind and body.  More than just an adornment, gems have metaphysical properties that can assist in balancing moods, developing intuitive awareness or protection from negative energy.

Jacqueline Just, owner of Angel Blessings Jewelry in Honolulu is my go-to gem specialist. She characterizes gemstones as tools for your everyday, and the more tools you have in the toolbox the better! For Jacqueline, this means studying up on the meanings and properties of each gemstone. To learn more about the healing power of gemstones and to better understand the capabilities of each stone, she suggests The Book of Stones by Robert Simons & Naisha Ahsian.

So how do you know which stone is right for you?  Jacqueline suggests trusting your instinct and letting the stone pick you.  It’s common to find yourself drawn to a particular crystal whether by it’s color, shape or intuition. If you are in a store, physically pick up the crystal you find yourself attracted to and notice how it feels.  If you are looking for a crystal for a particular reason (meditation, grounding, etc) hold that intention in your mind and project it to the crystals in front of you. Close your eyes and take a few relaxed deep breaths and be open to receiving any visual or vibration.  Open your eyes and see if a crystal speaks to you.

As mentioned, each gemstone holds a different energetic property that will help attune the body, mind and soul.  Crystals and gemstones are a very personal possession and what works for you may not work for your best friend or mother.  There are a few stones that Jacqueline suggests are universal and can benefit anyone, so if you have no idea where to start, try exploring these stones.

Amethyst- Amethyst is a purple quartz and is said to be a meditative and calming stone.  It works in the emotional, spiritual, and physical planes to provide calm, balance, patience and peace.  Amethyst has a gently sedative energy that can promote peace, happiness, and contentment. It also is said to bring emotional stability and inner strength. This stability and strength not only helps one hold firm in one’s life, but it can enhance flexibility and cooperation. Amethyst is associated with the third eye and crown chakras.

Citrine – Citrine is a yellow variety of quartz and is known as the stone of prosperity and success. It is said to promote and manifest success and abundance in all areas but particularly business.  In addition to manifesting abundance, citrine also brings energies of generosity so that the prosperity and success is shared. Citrine is also a solar plexus chakra stone used metaphysically to increase and clarify personal power and energy.

Rose Quartz- Rose quartz is often called the “Love Stone.” It’s energetic properties involve unconditional love that opens the heart chakra. This makes rose quartz suitable for every type of love: self-love, family, platonic, and romantic. As a variety of quartz, rose quartz has high energy that can enhance love in any situation. Emotionally, rose quartz is used to balance emotions and bring peace and calm. This calm emotional balance brings stress relief and eases of anxiety.  It also carries the energy of forgiveness, tolerance, and compassion, helping us to see the good in both ourselves and others.
