This dark and savory soda is a refreshing twist from overly sweet beverages. Mixing the savory flavors from tamarind, lime, and just a pinch of salt, this recipe is bound to delight those that love interesting new cocktail flavors.
A homemade sweet tamarind soda fits into our excitement about healthier cocktails around here (like Mulberry Fizz and tea-infused vodka). This one is another awesome twist to add to our mixology menus. I love tamarind paste in lentils and in curries, but when playing around with some new recipes last week I thought it would be fun to mix it into a soda, and my boyfriend and I were both stoked on the flavor combination. We had it in the afternoon way before cocktail hour, but I look forward to adding a bit of liquor for my next happy hour.
Sweet Tamarind Soda (With or Without Booze)
1 Tablespoon tamarind paste (read more about tamarind here)
2-3 Tablespoons agave nectar
Pinch of salt (less than 1/4 teaspoon)
2 cups (16 ounces) plain, unsweetened soda water
Vodka or dark rum (optional)
Slices of lime, for garnish
- Whisk together tamarind paste, agave and salt with just enough soda water to smooth out the tamarind paste. Depending on the brand you use, you may need to add a bit more water to ensure it dissolves completely. I like to use a small whisk, but you can also use a fork or spoon. Add more soda water to measure 1 cup.
- Divide tamarind soda mixture evenly between two glasses filled with ice, then top off with remaining 1 cup soda water. Stir to mix tamarind mix into the soda. Add a splash of vodka or rum and stir once more to combine.
- Add a few slices of lime (and a squeeze, if you’re feeling it!) and that’s it. Sip and savor!
Yield: 2 sassy, sweet drinks
