We’ve partnered with MATTER, a socially motivated business focusing on affordable luxury, for a collection of articles across our network.
As both a writer and the accounts manager here at IM, I couldn’t be more stoked on working with a brand that is doing good business with good products. They value openness and transparency in their brand, and want to encourage customers to uncover and value the process of where and why something is made.
MATTER is a brand that makes ‘travel wear with stories to tell,’ sourcing heritage prints and styles from around the world. “We value the heritage of these prints and the stories they hold but we also reinterpret them to add modernity into it,” says founder Ren Yung Ho.
The founders, Ren and Yvonne had the brainstorm for MATTER while working in Mexico. Their mission is threefold: to foster designer-artisan collaborations, inspire consumers to value provenance and process, and pioneer industry change and sustainability for rural textile communities.
They’ve recently expanded their offerings from just pants into timeless tops, jumpsuits, rompers, bags and scarves. Additionally, they use the off-cut fabric left over from pattern making to make the #mattermini series – clothes for children.
Sustainable fashion is going to be the next really big field of innovation for living the good green life. ‘Fast fashion’ is harming humans that work in dangerous, low-wage jobs, our landfills and our ecosystem with poorly grown or manufactured materials. Yes, clothing donation is helpful, but really the goal should be to produce more sustainable, more quality products that last a lifetime.
MATTER is taking on fast fashion, by creating gorgeous (I think!), unique pieces that respect both nature and culture, and that is how fashion is going to move forward for us all.
