I consider myself a really conscious consumer: as often as possible, I try to choose brands of that make products that are good for people and planet.
This can manifest in a lot of different ways: I choose organic food from companies that are doing agriculture well, clothing from companies that support artisans and fair-trade practices, and products for the home that are made to last, thus reducing our impact on the planet.
As a blogger, I’m pretty lucky to partner with some really incredible brands to share their story and their products, and one of the newest partners I have is Avocado Green Mattress, and I’m so excited to introduce them to you!

Why I think Avocado Green is Doing Business Right
A few months ago I moved into a new home, and had the opportunity to rebuild my bedroom. I started looking into natural mattress options, and was pretty excited when I connected with Avocado.
This company caught my eye for their beautiful mattresses that are made with 100% natural latex, wool, and organic cotton, and yet free from all the nasty chemicals that are often found in traditional mattresses. A few months ago, I was also able to try out their green pillows, which I really, truly enjoy as well.
But better yet, Avocado Green is really ‘walking the walk,’ as they say.
Every Avocado mattress and pillow is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment – this means the mattresses are scientifically proven to meet some of the world’s most rigorous, third-party emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and phthalates. Sounds pretty good, right?
The mattress is made with wool, so it’s not vegan friendly. But here’s why I decided to choose a non-vegan bed even though I live a vegan lifestyle: wool is a natural fire retardant, and the only ingredient that can be used on a mattress for fire protection that’s not chemical-based. Avocado Green Mattress uses OEKO-TEK Standard 100 certified natural New Zealand wool from a company called Joma.
Joma Wool is carefully shorn from crossbred sheep, which freely roam amongst New Zealand expansive farmlands. Their wool comes from farmers who abide by strict rules and regulations around animal welfare. They support careful handling of natural resources, including “their beloved sheep.” They work with those who safeguard their well-being at every stage, and promote healthy ecosystems amongst their grazing pastures.
And honestly, when given the option, I’d rather choose an ingredient from animals (because they didn’t die from the process) than one made from chemicals, but I know not all vegans or vegetarians feel that way. But a bed made from plants and fuzzy animals is a bed I can love.
Other ingredients in the mattress are GOTS certified organic cotton and 100% natural Dunlop latex from tree-tapped and sustainable sources. Even though skin-to-latex contact is not likely with normal use, it’s definitely a good idea to check with your doctor if you have a latex allergy.
They are committed to living a green life, and selling their green products as affordably as possible, and they want to make this option available widely. They offer a 100 night trial (I’m already super satisfied after 30 days), and they have a 25 year warranty!
On top of all that, they are committed to sharing their vision of a greener world via their beautiful Instagram account and their Avocado Green Magazine is full of excellent lifestyle tips about eating, healthier living, and being a conscious consumer. So yes, they sell only mattresses and pillows, but their team is as passionate about well-rounded green living as I am!
What’s it Like to Sleep on an Avocado Green Mattress
Each Avocado Green Mattress is ‘made fresh’ when ordered, and it comes wrapped up like a giant burrito in a large box. Because of the inclusion of latex, the bed weighs about 160 pounds, much more than previous beds I’ve owned. Luckily my kind (and strong) housemate was able to help the delivery dude, and they were able to get the bed onto my frame to be unwrapped. But if you don’t have an awesome housemate, they offer in-home delivery for a $149 fee if extra help is needed.
Once the mattress-burrito was unwrapped from the layers of plastic, it popped open pretty quickly, so be prepared for the quick expansion! It’s heavier than regular mattresses so definitely get someone strong to help you situate the bed.
Once unwrapped, the bed has an earthy smell that I soon realized was wool, but it was quite pleasant and grounding – like being on a farm! The smell faded within a day, and I can no longer smell it through my sheets.
I’ve been sleeping on my mattress for over a month now, and it’s truly delightful. I ordered the optional pillow top (ideal for side sleepers like me), and it’s not a squishy, sink-into-fluff kinda pillow top that makes you feel like you’re drowning. Rather, it’s an extra layer of solid comfort.
The mattress feels temperature regulating, and I’ve slept through warm and cool nights easily (the weather has been pretty wacky here in Honolulu the past month!). It’s very firm while also being deeply comfortable; I feel like I can just kinda melt into my bed since it’s so comfy and I know it’s so healthy! The feeling of sleeping on natural products is so endlessly awesome.

Disclosure: Avocado Green Mattress sent me a mattress for review, but this is the item I wanted to purchase anyway. Of course, all opinions are my own.
