Homemade Yogurt Recipe


1 quart of fresh raw milk
2 tablespoons Greek or Bulgarian starter cultures (found in most health food stores) OR two tablespoons unsweetened, additive-free yogurt with live cultures (also found in most grocery stores)


  1. Heat the raw milk over a medium heat to a temperature of 43 degrees Celsius (110°F). The temperature is important to monitor so that you do not kill off the beneficial nutrients. Remove the milk from the heat and add the culture starter.
  2. If you have a yogurt maker, mix these together according to the instructions and leave for between 8 and 12 hours.
    If you have a dehydrator, mix the milk and culture starter in a mason jar, cover and place in the dehydrator. Set the temperature to 43 degrees Celsius and leave for 8 to 12 hours.
  3. If you have a slow cooker, again mix the ingredients in a mason jar, then place in the center of the slow cooker and add warm water to the ceramic insert. You can add a warm towel over the cover for additional heat and again, leave for 8 to 12 hours.
  4. Once the culture time has passed, remove the mixture from the device you used and place into the fridge for an hour or two. The homemade raw milk yogurt will be ready to serve after two hours and can be sweetened up with honey or syrup and topped off with fruit, nuts, or granola.
